GR04- SL-28 Betulia
Luis Anibal Calderón is considered one of the most innovative coffee farmers in the municipality of Acevedo, in the Huila department of Colombia. His passion for specialty coffee and his deep understanding of the interaction between microclimate, soil composition, and coffee varieties have earned him international recognition.
At a time when many producers focused on mass production, Luis Anibal deliberately chose quality over quantity. This decision initially led to lower yields, but his focus on high-quality varieties and experimental processing methods paid off. Today, he is admired by many who were once skeptical of his vision.
His farm now serves as a model for other coffee growers in the region. Many seek his advice, wish to benefit from his knowledge, and acquire seeds from him.
FARM: VILLA BETULIA
VARIETY: SL-28
Bold, vibrant, and full of character.
Originally selected in Kenya by Scott Agricultural Laboratories in the 1930s, SL-28 has become one of the most celebrated coffee varieties in the specialty coffee world. It was first recognized for its resilience in dry conditions, but its exceptional cup quality is what secured its legendary status. Today, it is grown not only in East Africa but also by pioneering producers in Latin America who are exploring its remarkable potential.
SL-28 is loved for its lively acidity, pronounced sweetness, and complex fruit and umami character. Depending on where it is grown and how it is processed, you can expect notes of blackcurrant, red berries, citrus, tropical fruit, and floral undertones, often accompanied by a juicy, wine-like finish. Its ability to produce expressive, memorable cups has made it a favourite among producers, roasters, and coffee lovers alike.
For us, SL-28 is a variety that rewards both dedication and craftsmanship. In the hands of skilled producers, it showcases how genetics, terroir, and careful processing come together to create coffees with remarkable clarity, vibrancy, and personality.

This lot is produced through a carefully controlled fermentation.
Only fully ripe cherries are selected at harvest to ensure optimal sugar content and uniformity. After picking, the cherries are placed in bags and undergo a 72-hour aerobic fermentation (oxidation). Following fermentation, the coffee is dried slowly for about 20 days on raised African beds, ensuring even drying and the preservation of delicate aromatics
